Principal’s Message

Good luck to our team of swimmers who will be participating in the JIS Aqua Dragon Dash Swimming Competition tomorrow, Saturday, March 22.

More than 20 families attended our Open House event on Wednesday. It was wonderful to share information about our curriculum and programs, as well as guide families on a tour of the school. A big thank you to Fathima, Yunjie, Connie, Pyunggang, and the Primary Choir for their contributions to making the morning a success.

We have had a great response to our high school camps, with over 130 students signing up for the trips. I hope that details for the Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6 camps will be sent out early next week.

I enjoyed both the High School and Primary School assemblies this week, which focused on Down Syndrome Awareness, as today is Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Many of our students and staff recognized this by wearing odd and crazy socks. Crazy socks are chosen as a symbolic act to raise awareness and celebrate the uniqueness of individuals with Down syndrome, as chromosomes in a karyotype resemble socks. I was very impressed by the confidence with which the students led both assemblies. If you’re driving past AIS tonight, look up to see how we’re lighting the school up in blue to recognise WDSAD

lso special thanks to Ms Susan, Ms Jeandri and our Year 6 students who have been selling socks, shirts and other goodies this week to raise money for the Indonesian Down Syndrome Association.

Last Day of Term

The last day of Term 1, Friday 28th March will be a regular school day with Preschool finishing at 12:30pm, Primary School at 2:30pm & High School at 3:00pm

New Staff

We will be welcoming two new members of staff to our teaching team in Term 2. Ms Kourtney McCarthy will replace Ms Jeandri as our Year 6 homeroom teacher. Below is part of Ms Kourtney’s introductory message to her year 6 students

My name is Miss Kourtney and I’m really excited to come and work with you and be your teacher alongside Miss Susan in April.

I was born in Australia and have been working in a small country town called Cloncurry. It only has 6000 people.

At the start of this year I left Australia to travel to India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia. I spent some time in Jakarta, Sulawesi and Raja Ampat.

Mr Herman Krugger will join as our Business & Economics Teacher to fill the vacancy we have had since the start of the year. I know tjh Mr Herman has already been joining some of his classes online to ensure a smooth transition when we return in April. Mr Herman shared the following bio with us

Herman Kruger is a South African qualified teacher with a Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, and Psychology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, and QTS from the UK. With a diverse international teaching career, he has worked in the UK, Malawi, Brunei, South Korea, Vietnam, and Malaysia, gaining valuable experience in both academics and pastoral care.

Beyond the classroom, Herman has taken on leadership roles as a Head of House and Head of Boarding, fostering student well-being and development. Passionate about the outdoors, traveling, and sports, he enjoys exploring new cultures and experiences.  He is a proud father to Justin (26), who teaches English in Malaysia, Charlene (22), who is studying Architecture in Malaysia, and Harmon (15), who frequently travels to South Africa to visit his mother.

Herman is excited to join the AIS community with his wife, Lisa, and looks forward to connecting with students, colleagues, and families.

Morning Drop Off

I would like to start by thanking the families who are supporting the school by dropping their children off at the correct school entrance in the morning.

Families with students in Preschool 3 - Year 4 should be dropped off on the South Campus / No 68. These families have green or pink labels for their car dash.

Families of students from Years 5 - 12 should be dropped off on the North Campus / No 69 and the students walk through the tunnel to South Campus. These families have blue labels for their car dash.

While this has been a request that many families have supported over the past two years, our security team will be enforcing this for all families from Monday 24th March. Families who only have children in Years 5 - 12 (blue car dash labels) will be directed to the North Campus and will not be permitted to enter the South Campus at morning drop off time (0715-0815).

NAPLAN - Repost

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from next Monday to Wednesday.

NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents/carers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. Each teacher will have the best insight into their students’ educational progress.

Parents/carers can use NAPLAN reports, along with other school assessment reports, to discuss their child’s strengths and areas for improvement with their teacher.

NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.

NAPLAN is made up of tests in the 4 areas of:

  • reading

  • writing

  • conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)

  • Numeracy.

NAPLAN results allow parents/carers and educators to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time – individually, as part of their school community, and against national standards.

The tests support monitoring and evaluating the performance of schools and school systems in these fundamental capabilities. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education approaches are working, areas to be prioritised for improvement, and those schools requiring support in the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy.

The best preparation for NAPLAN is teaching and learning the curriculum. Children can be reassured that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and they should simply do the best they can on the day.

If you would like to see the types of questions in a NAPLAN test, visit the NAPLAN public demonstration site.

Cluey Learning has also prepared a Complete Guide to NAPLAN; please click on the link to access their guide; it will answer all your questions and give you links to practice papers. If you still have questions, please contact your child's classroom or homeroom teacher.
