We all have an innate desire to know where we belong and what makes our world the way it is. The Studies of Society and the Environment (SOSE) give students this fundamental underpinning to their lives.

The SOSE program covers what has been traditionally taught as:

  • Geography
  • History
  • Social Studies
  • Environmental Studies

It is a more holistic approach to these subject areas and recognises their strong connections by providing shared contexts.

Examples of this may include explaining the contribution of different cultures to the growth of our diverse society or comparing how people utilise their environment to satisfy various needs.

From Year 7 to 12, these subjects confront students with the understanding that there are constraints are imposed on the way we can act; we are obliged to operate within limitations imposed on us by the natural environment. We have to understand the ideas and values that bind people together in order to maintain a stable society.

On the other hand, students also learn that the world is constantly changing and that it is individuals who make things happen. SOSE gives students the understanding they need to make sense of what is going on in the world, and the perspective to view their role in the world positively.
