Australia Day

Australia Day

On the 26th of January, AIS celebrated Australia Day, a national holiday which brings together the different families and communities in Australia for typical “Ozzie” merriment. It was originally commemorated as a time when Australia was first ‘founded’ by Captain Cook in 1788. In Australia this would include BBQs, picnics on the beach and ending the day with fireworks. Over time, the holiday has become more of a way to celebrate what it means to be Australian. As Australia is truly a nation of migrants, the national identity includes embracing other cultures. While there were no fireworks at AIS, we did manage to come together as a school to talk about Australia and what Australia Day means. There was a buzz in the air on Australia Day as everyone dressed in the theme of Australia, so of course there were a lot of thongs, funny hats and green and gold colours. At recess the whole school gathered in the gym to listen to some classic Australian music (thanks Rolf Harris) and to eat pancakes. Not exactly traditional Australian food, but more easily digested than Vegemite if you don’t come from Australia!
