Biology Excursion to Ragunan Zoo
On Tuesday 24 February, the Year 11 and 12 Biology students, along with their teacher Ms. Julie Moreno, visited Ragunan Zoo and Primate Centre to collect information for their report on conservation. The group started the tour of the zoo at the impressive Primate Centre. They saw the gorillas in their very large and natural enclosures, were hooted at by excited gibbons and enraptured by the baby orangutans that looked so humanlike. The students took notes and photographs of conservation strategies in place at the world class Primate Centre.
After a tasty lunch at a local warung, they continued their tour through the Ragunan Zoo to look at the older style of enclosures, some quite depressing and dirty. They felt sorry for the monkeys in the jail-like cages, and the bears with nothing to do.
The students will now use the information they have collected to evaluate the conservation strategies in place at the Zoo, and recommend realistic improvements that could be implemented. The objective of this exercise is to pass the group’s recommendations onto the management of the zoo and possibly help to put some of their ideas into practice
