Parent Information Night
Parent Information Night

A well attended parent information night was held on Thursday 26 th March despite the date being a public holiday. The AIS, Balikpapan school community was able to take advantage of the expertise of the Heads of School from each campus as well Bruce Ferres, Principal of AIS Indonesia. All of our guests were in Balikpapan for a Heads of School meeting. The community was informed on topics that were particularly relevant for AIS Balikpapan at the moment. Our Head of School (HoS), Dean Parkin, posed the question, ‘what makes a school a quality school?’ Bruce Ferres spoke about the range of international schools and the proposed NAPLAN national testing, Brenton Hall (HoS Pejaten) informed the community about issues and challenges involved in the development and administration of a middle schools program, Lyn O’Meara (HoS Kemang) explained the advantages for students and teachers who participated in “Mathletics” and John Millis (HoS Bali) explored issues in establishing a parents group at AIS Balikpapan.

New teaching staff were introduced to the community. Mr Peter Rowe and Julie Kendal-Rowe outlined their experience, qualifications and expectations of their latest teaching challenge. Mr Dean explained the difficulties in recruiting qualified, experienced and talented staff in East Kalimantan. He expressed his delight to have them both as part of the team. Mr Dean also gave a sincere vote of thanks to Miss Elizabeth and Miss Marsha for their dedication to the school during the school’s rapid growth in 2008 and early 2009.

The evening concluded with a light super. Parents and members of the school board commented that the information presented was particularly valuable and relevant to the future development of our school.
