Ragunan Zoo

Visit to the Ragunan Zoo

On March 13, students from Years 5/6 went to Ragunan Zoo. First, we saw the tigers. Good thing they were sleeping! Then we saw the lions and the komodo dragons. They were huge! One of the komodo dragons was twice my length! The capybaras were next and at first, we thought they were huge guinea pigs, but they weren’t! Next, we saw the black bear. It looked a bit funny because it was standing up and running around in circles. Lastly, in the mammals area, we saw the porcupines! There were about thirty of them and they were swarming around!

We also visited the Aviary where we saw the bald eagle, Jakarta’s national symbol. We then came upon a really amazing sight, a peacock with its feathers open! It was beautiful! After that, we took the bus to the Schmutzer Primate Centre.

At the Centre, we first walked along the canopy walkway beside the artificial forest. It was magnificent! We saw different kinds of monkeys and gorillas. But what I really liked was the Orangutan Cave. It was a deep cave depicting the journey of a captive baby orangutan.

Finally, we viewed a movie titled “The Story of Rimba” which was about an orangutan that was caught by poachers and sent to many parts of Indonesia. It was a really heartwarming movie. After lunch, it was time to say goodbye. As I boarded the bus home, I realised the importance of protecting these beautiful animals.
