World Math Day

World Math Day Competition 2008

Excitement, high adrenalin, concentration, speed and the quest for accuracy were the defining characteristics of this global competition for the students in Ms Sue’s Year 5/6 Math group. This was the first time that AIS had participated in the competition and it proved to be a very valuable learning experience for the students involved.

The challenge was to see how many Math mental problems students could solve in 60 seconds against students of a similar age group from countries all over the world. The time frame for this competition was 48 hours from 6.00pm. Tuesday, March 4 to 6.00pm. Thursday, March 6. The overall target was to answer 50 million questions correctly. At the end of the competition, over 180 million questions had been answered.

Students who correctly answered over 1,000 questions received a World Math Day Gold Award as well as a Participation Certificate. It was exciting to see all AIS students in the group achieve this goal. Carlos ended the competition with a staggering 9,572 points while Nian Kee was able to answer 64 questions in 60 seconds.
