Visit to Aqua Danone and Water Cycle Experiment
On February 21, the three Year 3/4 classes went on an excursion to the Aqua Danone Water Purification plant in Sukabumi. The destination was chosen as the theme for Term 1 is ‘Water - A Vital Resource’.
The students left at 8.00am in six school buses. It was a fun drive with much singing, laughing and story-telling. When we arrived at the plant, we were met by the public relations staff of Aqua Danone who then led us on the factory tour.
During the tour, we saw how bottles of different sizes were made from pre-formed moulds, we watched how bottles were filled, and how packaging and sorting was done. When we left the factory floor, we watched a slide show on the production methods used at Aqua Danone which was followed by a question and answer session. We were fortunate to be joined by some parents and they also asked some questions!
It was a great day that complemented the work on the water cycle that we have been doing in class. After the excursion, we worked on our recounts of the tour. The visit to the plant has made our writing interesting and ultimately easier to write.
Not only did we have a great hands-on experience at Aqua Danone, back at school, we also watched a demonstration on the making of a mini water cycle. We placed very hot water in the bottom of the basin and watched as it evaporated and then condensed on the inside of the cling-wrap before raining down into the cup. During the demonstration, students were asked to consider questions such as “Did it make a difference putting ice above the model?” or "Would the model have worked without the plastic wrap over the basin?”. Everyone participated actively with many students contributing their thoughts and ideas.
