The primary role of the School Board is one of charting the long-term future of the school and maintaining oversight of school operations. The responsibility and management of day-to-day operations rests with the Principal and the Heads of School.
Role of AIS School Boards
- Act in a manner likely to exemplify and reinforce the school’s core mission and ethos;
- Develop and maintain healthy relationships between key stakeholders including effective communication channels;
- Ensure a strategic approach to the school’s future by setting major goals, policy frameworks and strategies;
- Provide feedback and advice on the school’s educational programs;
- Monitor, oversee and advise on operational aspects of the school including security, maintenance, cleaning, catering and transportation services;
- Provide advice on the proposed annual recurrent budget and fee schedule;
- Monitor the to-date progress of the recurrent budget throughout the school year;
- Make recommendations relating to the school site development plan;
- Review annual campus improvement plans established by the Head of School;
- Review stakeholder feedback about the school’s performance (e.g. Annual Parent Opinion Survey);
- Establish committees where appropriate.
The responsibilities of School Boards do not include:
- managing the day-to-day operation of the school;
- discussing individual issues relating to teachers, staff, parents or students;
- allowing special interests to dominate the Agenda;
- entering into contracts to purchase or lease land, buildings or capital items.
All nominated and elected members should serve for the 2010 academic year. Towards the end of the year a review process will be established with the aim of moving from an interim School Board to a permanent School Board with agreed structures and processes applying from the 2011 year onwards.
