Welcome to AIS Balikpapan, our newest school established to provide an international education for the residents of this small, industrious city in East Kalimantan. It was the display of enthusiasm by the community that enticed me to be part of this initiative. Having previously taught at the AIS schools in Jakarta and Bali, the opportunity to guide the development of AIS Balikpapan is another exciting challenge.
Our school opened in August 2007 and has grown quickly. This year, we have begun with four multi-aged classes catering to students from Kindergarten to Year 6 but expanding to high school years 7 and 8 in 2010. The engaging and reflective learning environment of our small classes fosters the development of the child as an enthusiastic life-long learner.
The curriculum at AIS is based on the Victorian Essential Learning Standards which focus on the teaching of life-long skills. Learning experiences are tailored to provide knowledge, skills and values at the child’s ability level. We implement a developmental, student-centred approach to teaching following an inquiry-based and interdisciplinary curriculum.
AIS educates students within a program designed to develop their academic, social, emotional and physical potential. The foundation of our instructional and curricular practice is based upon our respect for the unique learning styles of students, and an understanding of the needs of the internationally mobile child.
AIS Balikpapan is a closely-knit community of people who enjoy celebrating each other’s achievements. Every individual is important here and this means that staff and students arrive each day, full of drive and energy, ready to discover, learn and play. Throughout the time that your children are students at our school, we shall make every effort to involve and inform you about their progress and the opportunities that we provide.
