What Grows There?
Year 1/2 - What Grows There?

Year 1/2 students are studying about plants and trees this term. The theme is "What Grows There?". Students have been learning about the parts of plants and trees and the functions of the different parts. So far, we have discovered that leaves not only provide shade and shelter to many types of wildlife, but also feed the plant by taking in water. We also learnt about how roots provide food and foundation to the plant.

When studying the life cycle of plants, students learnt about the importance of the seeds of plants. We decided to conduct an interesting experiment by planting seeds in small bowls using cotton wool. We used three bowls - one with cotton wool and no water; one with cotton wool and water, but no additional water after the initial amount; and in the last bowl, there was cotton wool, and the seeds were watered daily. We of course discovered that seeds need daily watering to grow into strong and healthy plants.

The items used for this experiment included plastic bags, cotton wool, paper towels and water. Students planted three different types of seeds (corn, kacang hijau and beans) and monitored the development of the plants. The plants started to grow very quickly and we soon learnt that the shape of the leaves were different for each type of seed. We will be planting them outdoors very soon to see how tall they will grow.
